Hazmat/WMD Technician Training-40 hours

This course prepares Operations-level responders for Technician-level Hazardous Materials (HAZMAT) certification. This 40-hour course conforms to all competencies for OSHA 1910.120 and NFPA 472 chapter 7 for Hazardous Materials Technicians and provides participants with HAZMAT-specific response knowledge and skills, enabling them to respond safely and effectively to a suspected incident at the hazardous materials technician level.

Hazmat/WMD Technicians respond to releases or potential releases of hazardous materials and CBRNE for the purpose of favorably changing the outcome of the incident. They typically assume a more aggressive role than a first responder at the operations level, and have the technical expertise, tools and equipment to approach the point of release in order to plug, patch or otherwise stop the release of hazardous material.

• How to implement the employer's emergency response plan;
• Classification, identification and verification of known and unknown materials by using field survey instruments and equipment;
• Functioning within an assigned role in the ICS;
• Selection and use of specialized chemical PPE provided to the HM/WMD Technician;
• Performing advanced control, containment, and/or confinement operations within in the capabilities of the resources and PPE available;
• Technical decontamination procedures;
• Basic chemical and toxicological terminology and behavior:
• Termination of the hazmat teams role in the incident and transition to another agency.

Prospective students must be in good physical condition for strenuous physical exercise and shall have completed the following prerequisites prior to attending the course.
• Hazmat/WMD Awareness and HM/WMD First Responder Operations (Ohio Hazmat/WMD Series or equivalent)
• IS700 – National Incident Management System (NIMS)
• ICS100 – Incident Command
• Fit for duty physical exam within the past twelve months
• SCBA Training and Fit Testing
• Face shall be clean shaven in areas encountered by face mask seal
